Changes to Internship in Architecture Program

The following is an official release from the Canadian Architectural Licensing Authorities (CALA), on whose behalf a task group has been reviewing the Internship in Architecture Program, for the past few years. The task group has made a number of recommendations for changes to the IAP, the majority of which have now been approved by the Canadian regulators including the AIBC. This release highlights the major changes in addition to providing a “heads up” notice of additional changes soon to be implemented.

This release provides a high-level overview only. There are some program details yet to be resolved; expected within the next few months. A detailed implementation policy, necessary transitional provisions, along with a revised IAP Manual are being drafted.

The AIBC will share more information as it becomes available. In the interim, IAs and practitioners are invited to contact the institute with any comments or observations they may have on these proposals so that the final product can benefit from as many eyes and minds as possible. If you have any questions or comments, you may send them to Registration & Licensing Administration Assistant Emily Tyler at etyler@aibc.ca, or Manager of Registration & Licensing Róisín O’Neill at roneill@aibc.ca.

Internship in Architecture Program (IAP)

Update

Over the past several years a national task force, established by the Canadian Architectural Licensing Authorities (CALA) composed of all eleven Provincial/Territorial architectural regulators, has been reviewing the IAP examining ways to improve and streamline the Program.

The national task force has concluded its work and tabled recommendations for change which have been approved by the majority of the Provincial/Territorial architectural regulators. We are awaiting the remaining regulators’ responses so that changes can move forward uniformly across Canada.

Primary Changes are scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2012:

Reduction of the total length of the required experience from 5600 hours (3 years) to 3720 hours (2 years).

Elimination of Discretionary Experience (1880 hours).

Credit will not be granted for experience gained while a student at a school of architecture as a result of the reduction of the total length of the required experience and the elimination of Discretionary Experience. (This change does not affect individuals in the Syllabus program.)

Other Important Facts

As of January 1, 2012, newly appointed/enrolled Interns will automatically be entered into the revised Program.

Current Interns will be given the opportunity to stay within the current Program until June 30, 2012 or transfer into the revised Program at any time during the transition period. The current Program will cease to exist on June 30, 2012.

All recorded experience approved by the regulators prior to January 1, 2012 will be preserved and no individual will be disadvantaged when the changes are implemented. Those Interns who wish to maintain eligibility for reciprocity with the USA may continue to record and submit the required 5600 hours of experience.

Recommendation Currently Under Discussion

Credit will be granted only for experience gained while enrolled as an Intern in the IAP or with a reciprocal jurisdiction.

Note: For the purposes of the IAP the term ‘Intern’ will be used to mean, Intern Architect, Intern in Manitoba or Stagiaire en architecture in Quebec.

Questions should be directed to your respective Provincial/Territorial architectural regulator.

ARE Preparation Seminar: Building Systems (two-day seminar)

Professor Gustavo Mibelli will be coming to Vancouver to present his two-day intensive Building Systems seminar. The course will be held September 10 and 11, 2011 at the AIBC offices. This seminar was offered for the first time last year with great success. Professor Mibelli AIA has taught architecture for more than 25 years. As an architectural professor, he has guided an integrated design studio that incorporated systems, materials, and structures. Registration is now open and available online. The registration deadline has been extended to Friday, September 7, 2011. For more information, contact Registration & Licensing Administration Assistant Emily Tyler by e-mail (etyler@aibc.ca) or phone (604-683-8588, #324).

ARE Preparation Seminar: Structural Systems (three-day seminar)

Professor David Thaddeus is coming to Vancouver to present his intensive Structural Systems seminar. The course will be held August 12-14, 2011 at the AIBC offices. This seminar offers three full days of workshops, mock examinations, and questions & answers that will focus on preparing Intern Architects for the Structural Systems division of ARE 4.0. These workshops present techniques, strategies and skills that are invaluable to any IA preparing for this exam. Professor Thaddeus is Associate Professor of Structures and Architectural Design at the College of Architecture University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He teaches his ARE review course across North America, and has brought his seminar to Vancouver for the past four years. Each has proved to be invaluable to those who attended.  Registration is now open and available online. The registration deadline is Monday, August 8, 2011. For more information, contact Registration & Licensing Administration Assistant Emily Tyler by e-mail (etyler@aibc.ca) or phone (604-683-8588, #324).

ARE Preparation Seminars

Building upon the success of last year’s ARE Preparation seminars, the IAC committee continues to offer free study sessions in 2011 for Intern Architects who are preparing for the ARE Exams. This year, the emphasis will be placed on approaches for working through the vignette portions of each exam, focusing on problem-solving and time management strategies.
Each seminar will generally run from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. at the AIBC Architecture Centre. These seminars are designed to provide strategies and other tips for each exam, and are not intended to cover specific exam content. It would be helpful to have some familiarity with the exam materials and some experience with the graphic practice program prior to attending the respective seminars (except, of course, for the introductory seminar).
To reserve a spot for one of the seminars, or if you have any questions, you can contact Registration & Licensing Administration Assistant Emily Tyler by phone (604-683-8588, ext. 324) or e-mail (etyler@aibc.ca).
