City of Vancouver Bird Friendly Design Exhibition Extended Till November 6

September 24 – November 6, 2014

Through a series of information and photo panels, this exhibit will provide information on how architects and designers can incorporate bird-friendly design into their projects. Over 250 species of resident, migratory and over-wintering birds are regularly observed in the Vancouver region, but urbanization has had negative impacts on them. Based on the City of Vancouver’s Bird Friendly Strategy, the exhibit unveils the conditions required for native birds to thrive in Vancouver. Bird well-being matters because birds bring Vancouver to life with their songs, colour and flight. Their high visibility and audibility also make them an important experiential link between people and local biodiversity. In addition, birds provide ecosystem services in the form of pest control, pollination and seed-dispersal. Through this exhibit, observers can learn more about the Bird Friendly Design Guidelines, which are intended to be used by developers, planners, designers and landowners. The AIBC Gallery, located at #100 – 440 Cambie Street in Vancouver, is free and open to the public Monday – Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Current Exhibit: UBC SALA Presents “Conceptualizing the Technical”

AIBC Gallery

August  7 – September 19, 2014

This exhibit features 19 student team projects developed by fourth term Master of Architecture students studying at the University of British Columbia. The studio work featured is the result of a collaboration between the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture and the UBC First Nations House of Learning.

Each project on display explores the concept of “Research Centre” development in one of four institutional variants: centre, museum, archive, or memorial. Throughout the exhibit, the design process is illustrated through beautiful and provocative key images.  The exhibit also includes statements from individuals who participated in the studio as “clients”. This exhibit demonstrates how a real world context can lend meaning and clarity to help to speculative design endeavors.

Current Exhibition: Celebrating Diversity

May 1 – June 12, 2014

The exhibit features the work of graduating students from British Columbia Institute of Technology’s Architectural Science program. This year’s studio projects focus on British Columbia’s Strathcona neighbourhood. In the studio, students were challenged to develop a master plan, and then to select specific sites and programs for the area. The resulting exhibition showcases the students’ projects from the pre-design through to technical detailing phases. In developing their concepts, students consulted with local residents, businesses, not-for-profit organizations and design professionals to refine their ideas. You can download the BCIT Exhibition poster for more information.

Current Exhibition: Swiss Positions – 33 Takes on Sustainable Approaches to Building

The AIBC Gallery is pleased to host this international exhibition featuring 33 emblematic Swiss projects built over the past 20 years. In partnership with the Consulate General of Switzerland, Pacific Arbour Retirement Communities, the Swiss Canadian Chamber of Commerce and Ventana Construction.

While projects are spread geographically throughout Switzerland’s four linguistic regions, all exemplify unique solutions to sustainable development through technical expertise and innovation. The exhibition explores the architectural practices, engineering techniques, materials, and environmental protection methods used. The interaction between the built and natural environments while practicing responsible architecture is highlighted.

Through this exploration, visitors will see that sustainable development is not a ready-made formula, but rather a pursuit that challenges and inspires. The projects of architects such as Herzog & de Meuron, Gigon/Guyer and many more show that there is nothing that cannot be expressed by inventive, visual architecture that retains its capacity for complying with demanding ecological and economic choices. This exhibition, conceived and managed by art historian Nathalie Herschdorfer, is presented by the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs in cooperation with Swiss Embassies and Consulates around the world. To view a complete list of featured projects, click here. The exhibition media release is available here.

This unique exhibition will be available for public viewing from September 12 to October 17, 2013. The AIBC Gallery is free and open to the public Monday – Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
