Peter Wall Dinner Forum on Soft Architecture

Peter Wall Institute Dinner Forum Feb 24This special dinner forum features a talk and discussion led by designers Joe Dahmen and Amber Frid-Jimenez who will present recent architectural installations exploring softness.

Soft systems attempt to account for non-linear processes whose complexity derives from the shifting interrelationships between elements whose stability is rooted in dynamism. The move toward soft methodologies across disciplines represents a significant shift with important implications for the way we approach architectural environments and materials. Contemporary architectural explorations of softness build in new and technically sophisticated ways on earlier efforts to reduce architectural space to its primary elements. This talk will look at the effects of physical and operational softness on the experience of architectural space through the lens of recent public space installations using mycelium biocomposites and recycled materials. The designers use creative material exploration to provoke fundamental questions about our relationship to architecture.

The Urban Development Institute (UDI) presents TEDx featured international speaker Charles Montgomery as its February keynote.

What if our cities themselves had the power to make or break our happiness? Charles Montgomery explains how cities influence how we feel, behave, and treat other people in ways most of us never realize. Everything from the length of your commute to the depth of your front yard can have an unseen effect on your mind, emotions, and social life.

By understanding the effect that design has on our emotions and decisions, we can all share this empowering new vision of city life.

Referencing global and local examples, Charles shares his insights and research findings:

  • How city design can build more social connections and create more happiness
  • Explore where Metro Vancouver goes wrong and how we can fix it
  • The psychology of bad urban planning decisions and how to overcome this

Re-Imagining Urban Form and Policy in a Global Economy – The (Im)possibility of Design

UBC SCARP Urban Design Forum Mar 10-11, 2016This symposium examines the linkages between global capital flows, urban policy initiatives, the waxing and waning of local democratic control, and the urban form that these three interacting factors make manifest.

At the same time that cities like Vancouver, London, Dubai, and New York become festooned with glittering high rise “cash boxes in the sky”, places like Mumbai, India and Surrey, BC double their population in just a few decades – a growth fueled by the intra and extra national migration of people of far more modest means.
How do we makes sense of this? In that attempt, relevant questions that this symposium will explore include: Is it possible to combine top-down, highly organized and performance-oriented urban design strategies, with bottom-up more individualized grassroots and entrepreneurial approaches? Which of these approaches is more ecologically sustainable, more politically practical, and more economically astute? How can new forms of governance, urban policy and planning enable the emergence of alternative urban design outcomes? What is the role of design in the imagination and construction of resilient and democratic urban districts?

We hope that our forum will shed light on the dramatic changes occurring in our urban landscapes, and suggest ways to make them better.

Additional information regarding the symposium is available online.
