Introducing the Newly Redesigned AIBC Website

Now showing on a screen near you… thanks to those who have stayed tuned for our reveal! We are pleased to announce the launch of our newly redesigned website at www.aibc.ca, your central source of information on the Architectural Institute of British Columbia.

The latest version of our website advances our efforts to better serve the AIBC community and the general public. By amalgamating into one website, and making it mobile and tablet responsive, we hope to enhance our visitors’ experience and provide easier access to valuable information and resources.

New features include:

  • New home for eNews – As one of our primary communication channels, eNews is an essential vehicle for connecting with our audience. The eNews blog was previously hosted on this site, but it is now integrated into the AIBC website, eliminating the need to go to a separate site. Past and future content from eNews is housed in one central location.
  • Website optimized for all devices – Websites today need to provide visitors with information quickly and easily. Our new website utilizes responsive design and a user-friendly interface that is optimized for functionality and consistency. The new site has a clean design that engages visitors, loads content quickly and is easy to navigate, which makes finding content a breeze.
  • Consolidation into one centralized hub – Segmentation of member versus public sides no longer exists on the AIBC website. We have consolidated the two sides into one interface for all visitors and designed an intuitive user experience that we hope will encourage repeat visits. Additionally, we have integrated eNews into the new website so that content is available in one convenient location.
  • Revitalized home page, featured news and calendar of events – Our new home page has dedicated sections featuring the latest news and events. These sections highlight timely and relevant content that visitors can quickly and easily find. Click on “See All Events” takes you to a comprehensive monthly calendar of AIBC activity including a comprehensive listing of Registered Educational Provider and AIBC-delivered sessions.
  • Enhanced functionality and accessibility – Visitors will discover a significant improvement in the AIBC website’s functionality and accessibility. New website features comprise drop down menus, clear site navigation and a clean design.

What are your thoughts on the new website? Your feedback is important as it will help us continue to improve content and services.

Please email comments to communications@aibc.ca.

At the January 12, 2016 council meeting, the AIBC Council dealt with the following items:

President’s Report
• New council members Michelle Rupp (LG Appointee) and John Bass (UBC SALA Representative) were welcomed.
• Events attended since the last council meeting: AIBC Recognition Ceremony, Intern Friendly event, CALA National Meeting, RAIC Metro Vancouver Chapter meeting and strategic planning session, and AIBC Holiday Open House.
• On behalf of the AIBC, the updated CALA Reciprocity Agreement was signed, eliminating differential fees for out-of-province architects in every jurisdiction.

Governance Committee
• Per the Governance Audit (completed January 2015), the Governance Committee presented an updated suite of governance policies, reorganized and realigned further to the policy governance model. The council-approved policies will be posted to the website shortly, and a presentation on the Governance Audit itself will be made at the Annual Meeting.
• The committee will next review motions that should be captured as council policy, as well as a policy monitoring process and schedule.

Act Review Working Group
• Meetings continued with the Ministry of Advanced Education. Discussion covered the priority elements put forth by the AIBC.

Finance Committee
• The annual audit is nearing completion, with no adjustments yet being proposed.

Registration & Licensing Board Liaison Report
• Sean Rodrigues has completed his term as President of the CACB Board. The new president is Ron Kirkwood Architect AIBC, NTWA.
• The 74 Vancouver and Victoria ExAC candidates who wrote their exams in November will be notified mid- February of their results. A number of Oral Reviews will likely follow.
• Ten people signed up to write the AT exam.
• Oral assessments for BEA applicants will be coordinated in January and February.

CEO Report

External
• The council-approved 2016 budget incorporated a 3% increase. As at the end of December, 23% of the total amount invoiced was received. (Note at the time of this posting, approximately 95% of invoices were received prior to the Feb 1 deadline.)
• The November 2015 CALA Meeting addressed several items: 1) Further work regarding accreditation was required, 2) A dedicated CALA support person was approved in principle, 3) AIBC’s proposal to process APEC Architects was reviewed for approval by each regulator’s council (nearly all done as of the time of writing).
• Meeting with incoming RAIC ED Jodi Ciufo and President Allan Teramura was held. Of interest, their top priority is updating the Canadian Handbook of Practice.
• More than 150 guests participated in the annual AIBC Open House.

Internal
• Preliminary statistics from the Professional Conduct and Illegal Practice department indicate that the number of illegal practice infractions/inquiries was similar to last year. However, the number of files opened and resolved doubled.

Engagement 3.0
• Engagement 3.0, the third installment of AIBC’s engagement initiative, focused on external stakeholders. A series of questions was posed about “the AIBC” and the “profession of architecture/architects”. The feedback provided a window to the views of our external stakeholders. The Public Outreach Committee will take this information into consideration as it charts its next steps.

Register Update
• Council approved a motion at the last council meeting to establish qualifications for “student affiliates” and discontinued “student associates”. The register is now clear of the discontinued student associate class.

Other Business
• Motions were passed for committee changes, examination results and register amendments as well as terms of reference.

Read adopted November 10 council meeting minutes.

The next regular meeting of AIBC Council is scheduled for March 8, 2016. It will be held at the AIBC office between 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. For those interested in attending an AIBC Council Meeting, please confirm your attendance in advance by email to ttough@aibc.ca.

President’s Message: 2016 AIBC Annual Meeting – Save the Date!

It is my great pleasure to invite you to the 97th AIBC Annual Meeting which will be held on May 16, 2016, the first day of the 2016 AIBC Annual Conference. This important event is a terrific opportunity to hear from your elected council about the past year, learn more about the institute’s plans for the upcoming year, discuss areas of interest or concern as well as catch up with colleagues and new registrants.

New for the 97th AIBC Annual Meeting

In our desire to uphold the highest standards of governance and operations that are representative of institutional excellence, a number of positive changes have been implemented for this year’s Annual Meeting.

• The Annual Meeting will be held on the first day of the 2016 AIBC Annual Conference
Holding the Annual Meeting on the first day of the Annual Conference – moved from the fall to a spring schedule – allows more members the opportunity to attend, particularly those who are in Vancouver for the conference. Some members may recall this familiar format from past Annual Meetings. The meeting details are as follows:

97th AIBC Annual Meeting
Date: Monday, May 16, 2016
Time: 3 p.m. – 5 p.m. (registration opens at 2 p.m.)
Location: Vancouver Convention Centre West, Rooms 212-213
AIBC Learning Units (LUs): 2 non-core
RSVP: Online
Refreshments will be served.

• 2016/17 AIBC Council Call for Nominations package posted on the AIBC website
As more people choose electronic communications over paper-based communications, the AIBC is now posting all documents related to the Call for Nominations to AIBC Council online instead of sending the materials by mail. This change provides members with additional flexibility since the documents are readily available with the convenience of 24/7 accessibility. It is an environmentally responsible decision that eliminates the paper waste of unused forms. Please refer to the “Call for Nominations to 2016/17 AIBC Council” section below for more information.

• For the first time, council election voting will be conducted by electronic ballot
The AIBC has been conducting electronic voting for recent bylaw amendments with great success as demonstrated by the voting results, and we are confident our members will continue to see value with electronic voting for council elections. Eligible voters are encouraged to vote as soon as the voting period opens, however, arrangements will be made to allow casting of electronic ballots up to the start of the Annual Meeting. Stay tuned for further details on electronic voting.

• New quorum for the Annual Meeting
As per the recently approved administrative bylaw amendments, the quorum for the Annual Meeting is now set at 40 members as stated in the updated AIBC Bylaws.

• Invitation to submit Council Liaisons Expressions of Interest
Instead of holding elections for the Intern Architect or Architectural Technologist liaisons to council, we are inviting submissions of interest for these non-voting guest representative positions. Council will select these representatives from among those individuals who submit an expression of interest. This process is more consistent with the governance model deployed by council. Please refer to the “Council Liaisons Expressions of Interest” section below for further information.

Call for Nominations to 2016/17 AIBC Council

Nominations are now being invited for the 2016/2017 AIBC Council. This is your opportunity to help shape the work of the body responsible for the self-regulating governance of the architectural profession in British Columbia in the public interest.

Bylaw Amendments Now in Force

The bylaw amendments supported by members and honorary members who participated in the AIBC’s electronic vote (November 16 to December 10, 2015) have successfully passed the provincial government’s “disallowance” period and are now in effect. The three bylaw amendments are:

  • Bylaw 19.1 (amended) – The amendment of an existing bylaw in order to set quorum at 40 members for AIBC annual meetings;
  • Bylaw 38.0 and 38.1 (new) – The establishment of two bylaws to reinforce the Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct as the core ‘standards’ document with respect to the conduct, discipline, standards and honour of the profession of architecture in British Columbia; and
  • Multiple bylaws (CEO) (amended) – The amendments to 16 bylaws changes the former title of Executive Director to “Chief Executive Officer (CEO)” to modernize institute governance.

The AIBC’s Bylaws document has been updated to include these changes. This updated document, dated January 27, 2016, is available through the AIBC web site.

Updates to AIBC documentation with the CEO title have started and will continue to roll out until completion.

CES Reporting Period Deadline: Five Months Remaining to Earn and Report LUs

Top 5 Ways to Earn LUsFive Ways to Earn Learning Units (LUs) for Your Continuing Education System (CES) Requirements

  1. Attend AIBC Registered Educational Provider (REP) Events (LUs reported by AIBC)
The AIBC Registered Educational Provider program provides opportunities for members to obtain LUs that are pre-approved by the AIBC. At REP events you will be asked to sign an attendance record, this attendance record will be submitted to the AIBC and the LUs will be reported to your account on your behalf. For more information on our REPs and a complete list of AIBC providers, please visit the REP page on the AIBC website. For a list of upcoming REP events, check out AIBC eNews which has the most up-to-date listings of REP events.
  2. Attend the AIBC Annual Conference (LUs reported by AIBC)
The 2016 AIBC Annual Conference will be at the Vancouver Convention Centre from Monday, May 16 to Wednesday, May 18. This year’s conference theme is Building A Resilient Future and includes a keynote presentation, plenary session, seminars, workshops and movie night – all of which will be eligible for core and non-core LUs. Please visit the AIBC website for more information. Conference registration will open in March.
  3. Read Online Articles (Self-reported LUs)
There are a number of online learning opportunities that might be helpful to you. Please note the two different ways to report the reading of online articles. One method is completing a quiz after you have completed the article. A quiz with an article can be reported as core if the topic presented in the article complies with the guidelines for core topics in Bulletin 80. Any articles that are not accompanied by a quiz, even if the topic is a core topic, is only eligible to be reported as non-core. Please see Bulletin 80 for more details. Some suggested online continuing education sources:
    AEC Daily
    Architect Magazine
    Architectural Record
    Red Vector
  4. Become a Volunteer (Self-reported non-core opportunities and non-core LUs reported by AIBC)
Becoming a volunteer is a great way to gain non-core LUs and help out the architectural community. A member can only report eight maximum volunteer LUs per two-year reporting period, and these do not carry over to the next reporting period. There are many different volunteer opportunities, here are examples of the most reported types:
Sitting on AIBC Council, board, committee, task force or working group; or representative to a professional organization, or municipal design panel (LUs reported by AIBC) – You are eligible for one LU, per one year of the reporting period (maximum two LUs per two-year reporting period).
Be an AIBC Mentor (Self-reported LUs) – You are eligible to self-report one LU, per intern that you mentor through the AIBC mentoring program, per year of a reporting period (up to a maximum of two LUs per reporting period). You must be listed as the intern’s mentor on our AIBC records.
Community Committees (Self-reported LUs) – There are many architecturally relevant committees in the community that you may sit on and report for LUs, similar to AIBC committees you are only eligible to report up to two LUs per committee, per reporting period. The only requirement is that the committee be architecturally relevant.
  5. Attend Other Architecturally Relevant Events (Self-reported LUs)
A member is eligible to report any learning activities that they participate in as long as they feel they correspond and are inline with the guidelines laid out in Bulletin 80. Attend architectural events around town, and self-report the LUs when you do. Make sure to fill in the self-report form with as much detail as you are able, and keep backup documentation that you attended the event. Please ensure any events that you are self-reporting are NOT an AIBC event or an REP event. If you are unsure, please contact the event provider or review our list of REPs.

Please note: All self-reported submissions are considered on an individual basis and are subject to review and approval by the AIBC’s Professional Services Department. CES participants may be asked to provide supporting documentation in order to support the validity of their self-reported learning activities.

AIBC-registered architects and architectural technologists are reminded that the AIBC’s Mandatory CES two-year reporting period’s deadline is Thursday, June 30, 2016. This means participants must ensure they earn a total of 36 LUs for the two-year period.

For your convenience, an FAQ has been posted on the AIBC website to address commonly-asked questions.

Should you have any additional questions or require assistance, please contact Chloe Bouskill, professional development coordinator at cbouskill@aibc.ca.

AIBC Vancouver Island Chapter Appreciation Night

Since this year’s Festival of Architecture is being held in Nanaimo (a rare occurrence to have the Festival out West), it’s only appropriate that the focus of this year’s Appreciation Night should be on the RAIC Syllabus Program.

Victoria is very fortunate to have a very active Syllabus Program, special thanks to Christine Lintot Architect AIBC for heading up this program. There are approximately 15 students in the Victoria Syllabus Program and many of these students will display their projects that night and provide exposure to many local architects and other interested students. The Festival of Architecture is in the process of holding a design project among high school students on the Island. Thirty-one schools have entered competition and the winners will be able to construct a model of the designs in Nanaimo. Ian Naimath Architect AIBC, one of the tireless volunteers of the Festival, is planning on attending the Appreciation Night to provide an overview of what to expect at the Festival.

As a juxtaposition, Richard Linzey (RIBA) and head of the BC Heritage Branch will make a presentation on “A Career in Ruins” (but not literally)! John Cooke Heritage Restoration Engineer from Ottawa is also planning on attending and providing some brief overviews of Heritage Restoration to supplement Richard’s presentation.

The Appreciation Night is a “thank you” to all who presented to the Chapter in the past year, a time to leave the business at the office and provide an opportunity to socialize with our friends, colleagues, peers, mentors.
