Oral Review & Oral Review Preparation Workshop

The next set of oral reviews will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 25 and 26, 2013. The oral review is an interview-based examination open to those Intern Architects who have:

  • completed and logged at least 2800 hours; and
  • completed the required AIBC courses.

Applications, along with an employer’s letter and fee payment, must be received by Wednesday, June 19, 2013. Eligibility will be confirmed by the Registration & Licensing Department. For complete details and to download the application form, click here.

Registration Deadline for BC Building Code II

Friday, May 3, 2013 is the registration deadline for BC Building Code II. This 6 Core LUs course, which is offered only once a year, takes place the following Friday, May 10, 2013. Last Chance to Register: BC Building Code II

The registration deadline for the final session this year of BC Building Code II is Monday, November 19 at 8:00 a.m. This course covers professional responsibility, background, intent and concepts of significant code requirements and uses.  It is relevant for architects, technologists, building officials and other industry participants. Course content will:

  • review Letters of Assurance, professional design and field review in accordance with the current BC Building Code;
  • review spatial separation and exposure protection analysis;
  • review the building code requirements applicable to high buildings;
  • identify the unique fire protection problems with atria and interconnected floor spaces; and
  • review barrier-free design principles and learn the building code’s requirements for persons with disabilities.

Building Envelope Education Course Cancellation and Registration

The BEEP Module III course scheduled for November 21-22, 2012 has been due to lack of registrants. However, those seriously interested in the final BEEP module of the year, BEEP Module V Skin Problems: Building Envelope Design Issues (6 Core LUs), are encouraged to send in a completed course registration form as soon as possible. 2012 BC Building Code – What’s New for Architects

The new 2012 British Columbia Building Code will come into effect December 20, 2012. Building code expert Alan Brown Architect AIBC CP, of Alan Brown Architect, will provide an overview of the major changes to Part 3.  Brian Hubbs P.Eng. of RDH Building Engineering Ltd. will discuss changes to the window standards that will affect the specification of windows. Prepare for the ARE NCARB Exams at the AIBC

Building upon the success of ARE Preparation seminars offered in the past, the AIBC’s Intern Architect Committee (IAC) is excited to present a suite of ARE preparation resources for Spring 2012. It includes an introductory seminar as well as Professor Norman Dorf’s legendary seven-hour lecture, Insight – Demystifying the Graphic Vignettes of the ARE. This acclaimed video lecture series focuses on the vignette portion of the ARE examinations.  (For a quick preview, go to The AIBC will be offering it over a single day as well as broken down over several evenings.

ARE Preparation Seminar: Building Systems (two-day seminar)

Professor Gustavo Mibelli will be coming to Vancouver to present his two-day intensive Building Systems seminar. The course will be held September 10 and 11, 2011 at the AIBC offices. This seminar was offered for the first time last year with great success. Professor Mibelli AIA has taught architecture for more than 25 years. As an architectural professor, he has guided an integrated design studio that incorporated systems, materials, and structures. Registration is now open and available online. ARE Preparation Seminar: Structural Systems (three-day seminar)

Professor David Thaddeus is coming to Vancouver to present his intensive Structural Systems seminar. The course will be held August 12-14, 2011 at the AIBC offices. This seminar offers three full days of workshops, mock examinations, and questions & answers that will focus on preparing Intern Architects for the Structural Systems division of ARE 4.0. These workshops present techniques, strategies and skills that are invaluable to any IA preparing for this exam. Professor Thaddeus is Associate Professor of Structures and Architectural Design at the College of Architecture University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He teaches his ARE review course across North America, and has brought his seminar to Vancouver for the past four years.
