Order of Da Vinci Award Winner

This year, the Ontario Association of Architects (OAA) has awarded the Order of Da Vinci to Leslie M. Klein for his leadership and profound relationships within the profession and the community at large.

Mr. Klein, a member of the AIBC between 1994 and 2010, received the award in recognition of his significant and meaningful contributions to the profession.

Maura Gatensby Receives BOABC Jim Robison Award

Congratulations to Maura Gatensby, Architect AIBC, Practice Advisor at the AIBC, recipient of the Building Officials’ Association of BC (BOABC) Jim Robison Award.

The award was presented at the 60th Annual BOABC conference held in May 2015. The Jim Robison Award was given in recognition of Maura’s contributions, on behalf of the AIBC, to building code education throughout many code changes and in particular the 2012 BC Building Code 9.36 Energy Efficiency and 9.32 Ventilation amendments that came into effect December 2014.

The Jim Robison award honours a member of the association or a member of the building industry for significant contributions to the code development activities and goals of the BOABC. The award is not presented annually as it is given only when notable achievement warrants exceptional recognition.

Certified Professional Seminar

The City of Vancouver Certified Professional Committee is offering this seminar in what is hoped to be a series of continuous professional development events geared specifically towards Certified Professionals.

Attendees will be updated on the latest versions of the CP Manual, including the new proposed British Columbia version. The seminar will also deal with the responsibilities of CPs with respect to the energy compliance forms that have been developed to document compliance with the National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings (NECB) and ASHRAE 90.1 requirements under the Letters of Assurance in the British Columbia Building Code and the Vancouver Building By-law. Similarly, the responsibilities of CPs on projects incorporating green roofs will be addressed. The seminar will conclude with a question period that will include a short update from City of Vancouver staff on the latest issues of interest to CPs.

Role Call: AIBC Architect Selection and Collaboration Committee

The AIBC Architect Selection and Collaboration Committee is seeking new members. The committee’s Terms of Reference include:

  • Develop education and practice support strategies in the area of RFP’s and Competitions to provide architects with more accessible options in their repose to these modes of work acquisition;
  • Support and work with local stakeholders to advocate to the above initiatives as set out by the committee;
  • Review and update AIBC publications: such as Bulletin 63 (Competitions) and Bulletin 64 (Proposal Calls and Related Issues); and
  • Initiate improved communications strategy (including Professional Development workshops) with stakeholders and members.

    The Architect Selection and Collaboration Committee meets at the AIBC office on the third Wednesday of every month except for July and August from 12:15 pm to 2:15 pm.

ExAC Information Session & Social Event

This year, Intern Architects have the option to write the Examination for Architects in Canada (ExAC) in Victoria as well as in Vancouver. The exams will be held on November 2 and 3, 2015.

Starting on June 1 until July 15, 2015, Intern Architects can apply to write the ExAC. Intern Architects are eligible to write the ExAC if they are in good standing with the institute and have a minimum 2,800 hours of experience logged on a CERB, submitted and approved. The deadline for submitting CERBs for approval is June 30.

The ExAC registration form is now available and applications can be submitted to the AIBC in hard copy or PDF format via e-mail.

Three ways to attend June 11 Info Sessions: Vancouver location, Victoria location or online

To assist those who are interested in ExAC, the AIBC Intern Architect Committee will be hosting an ExAC information session and social event on Thursday, June 11, 2015, from 5:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. The event will be held at the offices of AIBC in Vancouver with a connection to the Cascadia Architects office in Victoria and also online as a simultaneous webinar.

The ExAC session, which will start at 6 p.m., will cover exam eligibility requirements and general exam information. Intern architects and newly registered architects who have previously taken the exam will be present to share studying strategies and answer questions.

Please note: for reasons of exam security, actual examination content cannot and will not be shared. In addition to being an information session, this is also a great opportunity to socialize with fellow Intern Architects interested in taking the exam and a chance to form study groups.

Come and meet members of the Intern Architect Committee and AIBC staff to ask questions, mingle and have fun. Food and drinks provided.
