Canadian Centre for Architecture: Multidisciplinary Research Program

The Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) in Montreal is launching a Multidisciplinary Research Program on the social, economic and technological shifts that took place in Britain in the period 1945–1975 and, specifically, how these transformations and reform efforts were registered through culture. The CCA invites researchers or practitioners from any relevant cultural discipline to propose papers fitting this topic for a working seminar to be held in Montreal during April 2014. BUILDEX 2014 Architecture Day

In 2014, BUILDEX will celebrate 25 years in the Vancouver market. At its core, BUILDEX was developed as an avenue for related industries to come together annually to share ideas, spur innovations and build business. Interior Wood Paint Stripping

This evening workshop will explore how to remove paint safely and effectively from interior wood in preparation for repainting or clear finishing. Safety, chemicals and equipment will be demonstrated and explained in this session. Heritage 101: Introduction to Heritage Conservation

In 2014 VHF will offer a new format for Heritage 101 over two nights. You must attend both nights to receive credit for the course. This workshop introduces the foundations of heritage conservation practice,  and talks about how heritage is regulated at the City of Vancouver Heritage Department as well as across Canada, and the tools and standards used. Instructors will discuss why conservation is important economically, culturally and as a green approach to sustainable communities. This course is taught by Senior COV Heritage Planner, Marco D’Agostini, Heritage Consultant, Don Luxton, and Heritage Educator Judy Oberlander. This course is required for the VHF Certificate in Heritage Conservation and is offered once a year. Taking place Wednesday February 26^th  and Wednesday March 5^th, 5:00pm – 9:00pm, at the Vancouver Heritage Foundation (#402 – 510 W Hastings, Vancouver). Cost for this 2 day course is $130. The Yale Hotel

Brent Beatson of Rize Alliance will give a talk on the restoration of the Yale Hotel that included a complete renovation of the SRO suites, seismic upgrading, and the refurbishment of the mechanical systems, the famous blues venue and the 1950′s neon. The original 1883 Yale Hotel hotel began as a CPR bunkhouse, survived the 1886 fire, and was refurbished as The Colonial Hotel in 1889. Brent will talk about the 2011 Heritage Revitalization Agreement that made the hotel restoration possible, & included the addition of the neighbouring apartment tower. Building Smart with Energy Efficiency – 2014 Half Day Workshop

Presented by the British Columbia Building Envelope Council (BCBEC) and the Homeowner Protection Office (HPO), a branch of BC Housing, this half-day workshop will focus on energy efficiency in new and retrofit buildings. Industry leaders will provide insights into key issues, including insulation strategies, high performance walls and  energy-efficiency code requirements. The workshop will also examine some of the challenges and options being explored in multi-unit residential and institutional buildings.
