London’s Walkie-Talkie Building Sets The World on Fire — Literally

The most astonishing thing about the “Walkie-Talkie tower melts car” story is that there is ever enough sun in normally grey and rainy London to do the trick. But there is, as motorist Martin Lindsay discovered when he snagged a parking spot for his black XJ Jaguar outside 20 Fenchurch St. — known as the Walkie-Talkie building because of its bulbous, curved upper storeys. He returned to find the car’s driving mirror and other plastic fittings had melted in the intense heat created by what British journalists dubbed “the solar death-ray.” (They are also referring to the building as the “Walkie-Scorchie.”).
