Anatomy of a Roof Failure (Victoria)

In this presentation, Registered Roof Observer John Wells of Wells Klein Consulting Group Inc. will discuss the premature failure of a new single-ply roof system on a high-end Victoria high-rise condo building, as well as the investigative processes that led to the conclusions for this failure. The roof failure resulted in interior water damage claims well in excess of $150,000 and the requirement of a replacement roof (costing well in excess of $100,000) on a building that was less than six months old. This presentation takes place Wednesday, May 22, 2013, 12:00 noon – 1:30 p.m. at the Harbour Towers, 345 Quebec Street, Victoria. To register, go online to http://www.bcbec.com/seminars.php. VanDusen Botanical Gardens Visitor Centre Tour

The VanDusen Botanical Gardens Visitor Centre is a leading example in the field of living building and regenerative design. This project is paving the way for buildings across Canada to look beyond LEED Platinum standards. Being amongst the first of its kind in the country has provided great triumph at times but also many lessons learned and challenges faced. Through rigid constraints has emerged creativity and new design methods. The design process evolved to encompass research, material testing and collaboration. In this session Perkins+Will Canada’s Harley Grusko LEED AP BD +C, and Max Richter Architect AIBC MRAIC LEED AP BD+C will discuss the lessons learned in pursuit of certifying the VanDusen Botanical Gardens Visitor Centre as both a LEED Platinum project and a Living Building. A tour to follow. It takes place Thursday, May 9, 2013, 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. at the VanDusen Botanical Garden, 5251 Oak Street, Vancouver. To register, click here. Lunch will be provided.
