2012 Annual Firm Updates

Firm owners / administrators are reminded that the Architects Act and AIBC bylaws require every firm to file an annual update with the institute. On October 17, notification with information and instructions was e-mailed to all firm administrators/owners. If you haven’t already done so, please access your on-line firm profile (http://aibc.memberpro.net) and review / revise your firm’s information.  All updates are required by November 9, 2012, even if there are no changes. Should you have any questions, please direct them to AIBC Licensing Coordinator Kim Underwood (kunderwood@aibc.ca).

Green Materials and Structures: Where are we Heading?
In this half-day workshop, Diana Klein P.Eng. LEED BD+C, from Eco-Integration, will explore the impacts of material and system choices. With knowledge, case studies and interactive group discussion, participants will be able to develop a strong understanding of the role materials and systems can play in sustainability. Attendees will:

  • gain an understanding of the history of building materials;
  • explore the materials now used in designing, including their environmental impact;
  • learn about sustainable building materials and systems elsewhere in the world;
  • explore the concept of carbon neutrality and what it means in the context of buildings;
  • gain an understanding of material assessment and choices (e.g. Is Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) a tool we need for design?); and
  • explore the concept of designing for deconstruction (DFD), both philosophy and strategies.

It takes place Friday, November 23, 2012, 8:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Vancouver Centre, Oak Room, 711 West Broadway, Vancouver. To register, visit http://www.apeg.bc.ca/prodev/events/Sustainable_Structures_Sep12.html. A hot breakfast will be provided.

Glazing Systems for Buildings: Energy Performance and Structural Integrity
Making appropriate decisions at the design stage of a building project is critical to the safe and efficient operation of its windows and glazing systems. In this half-day seminar, an expert panel will discuss a selection procedure for energy efficient windows in the context of overall energy performance of the building enclosure and demonstrate techniques for assessing and reducing thermal bridges. Presenters include:

  • Brittany Hanam RDH Building Engineering Ltd.
  • Susan Hayes P.Eng. LEED AP BD+C, RDH Building Engineering Ltd.
  • Mark Lawton P.Eng. FEC, Morrison Hershfield
  • Leslie Peer P.Eng. FEC, Read Jones Christoffersen Ltd.
  • Leonard Pianalto P.Eng., Read Jones Christoffersen Ltd.
  • Dave Ricketts M.Sc. P.Eng., RDH Building Engineering Ltd.

Topics include: tempered and heat strengthened glass; glass in guards; thermal bridging and U-values for windows; solar heat gain coefficients; energy rating systems; and the concept of thermal weight. The session will begin with a short introduction to the new APEGBC Building Enclosure Practice Guidelines endorsed by the AIBC. This seminar is intended for design professionals and all others with an interest in the energy performance and structural integrity of windows and glazing systems for buildings. It takes place Wednesday, November 28, 2012, 12:30 – 5:00 p.m. in Vancouver (venue to be announced). To register, visit http://www.apeg.bc.ca/prodev/events/Glazing_systems_for_buildings2012.html.
