Sustainable Buildings and Structures Using Wood Composite Technologies

The University of British Columia’s Chair of Wood Building Design & Construction is pleased to present Professor Leander A. Bathon, Department of Architecture – Civil Engineering Institute of Building Materials and Structures at Hochschule RheinMain Universityin Wiesbaden, Germany. In this informative seminar, Dr. Bathon will describe European innovations in technologies for timber bridges and buildings and how these have been implemented in a variety of projects. Technologies discussed will include the HBV system for achieving wood/concrete shear connections using steel mesh connectors, and the HSK adhesive wood-steel connection system, both implemented in the new Earth Sciences Building at UBC. This presentation will be of interest to civil and structural engineers as well as architects currently working on timber-based, non-residential projects or interesting in doing so.

Professor Bathon has more than 20 years of experience in wood construction research and design, and his work has included managing material testing facilities, establishing the Timber Research Laboratory in Wiesbaden, and developing various innovative systems including CO2-neutral composite floor elements, intelligent building skins, and coupling systems for TimberTower.de.
